Dr. Zhang Zhongjing (150-219 A.D.), a native of Nanyang City of Henan Province during the period of Eastern Han Dynasty, was the first man who advocated the methods of differentiating the pathological conditions and treating the diseases in accordance with the theory of Six Meridians and the Eight Principal Syndromes.

He wrote several medical books on various topics, the most important of which is Shanghan zabing lun - Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous dieseases.

He is now respectfully called by the Chinese people the Sage of Medicine.
